Dachshund shedding: what every owner needs to know

Find yourself asking "do Dachshunds shed?". Yes, they’re moderate shedders and not hypoallergenic. While they’re not as prone to heavy seasonal shedding as some other breeds, most dachshunds will still shed year-round, with slightly heavier periods in spring and autumn as their coat adjusts to changes in temperature.

During these times, you may notice more hair than usual on your carpets, furniture, and clothing. It’s completely normal and usually short-lived, but regular brushing during these periods helps keep it under control. Outside of seasonal changes, shedding tends to be lighter and more consistent. Whilst they don’t leave substantial amounts of hair around your home, you’ll likely still notice a bit of fur where your pup has been.

There are three main types of dachshund coats, each with varying grooming requirements and shedding tendencies - smooth-haired, long-haired and wire-haired.

Smooth-Haired Dachshunds

Smooth-haired dachshunds have short, sleek coats that shed lightly to moderately. Shedding is usually consistent year-round, with only slight increases in spring and autumn. Their fine hair doesn’t fall in clumps - it tends to stick to clothing and furniture. In terms of grooming, they’re low maintenance. A weekly brush is usually enough to remove loose hair and keep their coat looking healthy.

Long-Haired Dachshunds

Long-haired dachshunds shed a similar amount to smooth-coated dachshunds, but it often looks like more due to the length of their fur. Their coat is more prone to tangling and matting, especially around the ears, chest, and legs, so grooming should be more consistent.

Brushing 2–3 times per week helps remove loose hair and keep the coat in good condition. Using a deshedding tool alongside regular brushing can also help manage loose undercoat and reduce the amount of hair around your home.

Wire-Haired Dachshunds

Wire-haired dachshunds tend to shed the most. They have a double coat, with a wiry outer layer and softer undercoat, which requires more upkeep. Because of this, they’re considered the highest maintenance when it comes to grooming.

Along with regular brushing, some owners opt for hand-stripping to remove dead hair and maintain the coat’s texture. A weekly brush is recommended, with extra attention during heavier shedding periods to keep loose hair under control.
